MENA Newswire News Desk: A nationwide Salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers has prompted urgent food safety warnings and widespread recalls across 19 U.S. states. The outbreak has sickened 68 individuals, with 18 requiring hospitalization. No fatalities have been reported. The investigation remains ongoing, with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) actively working to identify and address additional risks.

Salmonella cases rise; cucumbers from Mexico linked to multi-state outbreak

The source of the outbreak has been traced to cucumbers grown by Agrotato, S.A. de C.V., based in Sonora, Mexico. Multiple companies have issued recalls of both whole cucumbers and prepared foods containing cucumbers, such as salads and wraps. Consumers are urged to check their homes for affected products and dispose of or return any recalled items. Businesses handling the cucumbers are advised to reference specific recall notices for packaging details.

Among the companies issuing recalls are SunFed Produce LLC, Baloian Farms of Arizona Co., Walmart, Supreme Service Solutions LLC, and Yummi Sushi LLC. Products include bulk cucumbers, pre-packaged salads, cucumber slices, sushi items, and various vegetable trays. Packaging details vary, with some cucumbers bearing a sticker or being sold in clear bags or plastic containers. Consumers are encouraged to review the FDA’s recall table to verify whether they have affected items.

The FDA has emphasized that recalled cucumbers should not be consumed under any circumstances. Surfaces and utensils that have come into contact with these cucumbers should be thoroughly washed and sanitized. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, typically appearing six hours to six days after exposure. Those experiencing severe symptoms, such as persistent diarrhea, high fever, or signs of dehydration, should seek medical attention immediately.

Businesses have also been instructed to cease the sale and service of any recalled cucumbers. The FDA advises that recalled cucumbers may have been distributed in bulk containers or packages with lot codes starting with “X.” Establishments must also sanitize any surfaces that may have been in contact with the contaminated produce.

The investigation into the outbreak is ongoing, with the FDA collaborating with importers and distributors linked to Agrotato, S.A. de C.V. Consumers and businesses are encouraged to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to minimize risks. Updates on the investigation and recalls will continue to be shared through the FDA’s official channels.

This outbreak highlights the critical importance of food safety and prompt response measures to protect public health. Individuals seeking more information about the recalls or experiencing Salmonella symptoms should consult the FDA’s safety resources or contact their healthcare provider.
